Orvis Corporate Headquarters – Sunderland
For Trudell Consulting Engineers, responsible development includes
consideration of many environmental factors. At the Orvis Corporate
Offices in Sunderland, Vermont, TCE worked closely with Bread Loaf
Corporation, starting in 1998, to preserve 377 acres for black bear
habitat and conserve wetlands surrounding the new corporate offices.
The impressive architecture of the new office building designed
by Bread Loaf retained a calm, natural sensibility that evokes a
sense of the outdoors, despite an interior that houses active corporate
headquarters of a national company.
TCE was responsible for all aspects of the site design, which included
the construction of new access ramps for limited access to US Route
7 and Route 313, on-site wastewater disposal for 6,000 gallons per
day, stormwater treatment, and a new, one-acre pond. The project
was completed in 1999 and TCE continues its relationship with Orvis
through annual inspections.
Orvis Flagship Store – Manchester
After successfully working with the Orvis and Bread Loaf on the
corporate offices in nearby Sunderland, TCE was up to the challenge
when Orvis decided to construct a new Flagship Store to replace
the antiquated original retail store on Route 7A in Manchester Village.
A primary project goal was to combine the aesthetics of a sporting
lifestyle with the function of a major retail facility.
Trudell Consulting Engineers (TCE) was part of the design-build
team with Bread Loaf that translated the Orvis company’s reputation
for high-quality fly-fishing equipment and apparel into site design
that included water pools and casting ponds to appeal to customers,
novice fly-fishermen, and tourists. Creation of genuine-looking
water spaces was vital to the design, both in and outside the store.
The existing Orvis building was demolished to make way for the 25,000
square foot Adirondack style retail outlet. The site development
involved reconstruction of all infrastructure including power, lighting,
sewer, water and stormwater. New parking facilities, access roads
and a recirculation pump system for the casting ponds were designed
by TCE. The existing store was kept in operations during all of
the construction, which yielded additional challenges to the design-build
team. The project was completed in 2003.
